Realistically, the Mets season was lost way back in April when everyone realized Johan Santana wouldn’t be around much this year and R.A. Dickey would be the ace.
The season was put into a nutshell earlier this week when Nationals busted out the big brooms for a four-game sweep of your New York Mets. At some point during that sweep, all mathematical hope was lost as was mine.
A .500 season at this point looks like a long shot. The Mets have won just 2 of their last 10 games and with just 11 games remaining, it would take a tear to reach 81 wins.
If that’s not possible, a weekend sweep of the Braves would be a nice topping to this melted sundae of a season. Further, more wins like Friday night’s 12-2 conquest over Atlanta brings a few teams closer to the Braves for the National League Wild Card berth. Currently, St. Louis is just. 3.5 games back and San Francisco, winner of six in a row, is 5 behind the Braves.
Not that much longer, Mets fans. We’re almost there.
